"A unique Being, an extraordinary Man arises in this world for the benefit of the many, for the happiness of the many, out of compassion for the world, for the good, benefit and happiness of gods and men. Who is this Unique Being? It is the Tathagata, the Exalted, Fully Enlightened One." – Anguttara Nikaya. Pt. I, XIII P. 22

This course provides an introduction to the life of Shakyamuni Buddha, also known as "The Buddha", as well as a chronological introduction to the Teachings he expounded during his time on earth. This form of presentation provides class participants with an understanding of the time and space in which the Teachings of the Buddha evolved and also how these apply to modern day practitioners. The course begins with the birth of the Buddha and ends with his passing in his early 80s.

Objectives

While the Buddhist Teachings represent a moral and philosophical system, it should not be studied in a strictly academic fashion. Putting these Teachings into practice actually presents the Buddhist Teachings in their true form by creating the causes and conditions for realization within one's self. Therefore, the objectives of this course are:
  • Familiarize students with the life of Shakyamuni Buddha as well as the early Buddhist practices, and the Pali Cannon.
  • Generate interest in practice, and provide an entree to continuing study
